Shelley Winters

January 15, 2006 Shelley Winters, Winner of Two Oscars, Dies
Shelley Winters, who once described her life as a "rocky road out of the Brooklyn ghetto to one New York apartment, two Oscars, three California houses, four hit plays, five Impressionist paintings, six mink coats and 99 films," died yesterday. She was 83, although some sources say she was 85.
A major movie presence for more than five decades, Shelley Winters turned herself from a self-described "dumb blond bombshell" in B pictures to a widely respected actress who was nominated four times for Academy Awards and Stared with David Nicholson in City on Fire.
By Roseanne Barr, comedian whose grandmother on her eponymous 1990s sitcom was played by Oscar winner Winters

For me, The Poseidon Adventure was the greatest and most moving performance by any woman actor ever. I wanted her to play my grandmother, who in real life was also a force of nature. Aside from picking Shelley's brain constantly to make her tell me what she used as inspiration/motivation for her various roles and just being able to watch her act, I loved hearing about the men she had liaisons with — that was a hoot! She was a raging feminist too, and a freethinker. And she was also a fearless presence in the fight for civil rights on behalf of black people in Hollywood — and therefore culture at large.

John Kenneth Galbraith, 97

Sun 4/30/2006 John Kenneth Galbraith, 97, Dies; Economist Held a Mirror to Society Mr. Galbraith, an iconoclastic economist, teacher and diplomat, was one of the most widely read authors in the history of economics.
Mr. Galbraith was one of the most widely read authors in the history of economics; among his 33 books was "The Affluent Society" (1958), one of those rare works that forces a nation to re-examine its values. He wrote fluidly, even on complex topics, and many of his compelling phrases — among them "the affluent society," "conventional wisdom" and "countervailing power" — became part of the language. many pages | Famed economist
By Amartya Sen, Nobel-prizewinning professor of economics at Harvard
If Walter Bagehot was right to think that "one of the greatest pains to human nature is the pain of a new idea," then John Kenneth Galbraith caused a lot of pain in the world. He forced people to think and rethink about an astonishingly broad range of ideas. In analyzing the contrast between the private affluence of many and the public penury of all, or the special features of the new industrial state, and many other social issues, he led us toward a powerful understanding that raises questions about values and policies in a compelling way. An extraordinary human being, full of affection, humor, goodwill and creative insight, Galbraith was one of the great intellectuals of our time.

Ed Bradley
By Dan Rather, former anchor of the CBS Evening News

It was Ed Bradley's signature moment: wading into the ocean to help an exhausted Vietnamese refugee make her way to shore. That simple, human act from 1979 stands so well for the career of one of the greats, because it spoke to both the reporter and the man.

Ed, as much as anyone I have ever met, had a real sense of just who he was. That is no small thing, especially in television. And those lucky enough to be around him always knew who he was too —a gentleman of extraordinary character, a straight shooter and a pioneering journalist destined to be remembered.

We'll miss the reporter, and the man.

LINE ROBILLARD (1943 2006) Peacefully at the Griffith McConnell Home in Montreal on October 25th after a courageous battle with cancer. Daughter of the late Claude and late Denyse (Guimont) Robillard, dear stepdaughter of Thérèse Robillard, and dearest sister of Claude, Marie, Andrée (Eric Lefebvre Ganne), Jean (Paule Lévesque) and Phillippe, loved aunt of ten nephews and nieces and loving companion of Stephen Kinsman.
After graduating in Economics and Political Science from McGill University, Line took a further political science course at La Sorbonne. She worked for Cyr us Sulzberger of The New York Times in Paris and pursued a Cordon Bleu cooking course at the same time. Between 1971 and 1981, she worked with the U.S. Department of State as a political analyst, Consul to Oran (Algeria), and was subsequently program director at the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO.
From 1981 to 1987 she was special project consultant for the Royal Commission on the Canadian Economy ('The MacDonald Commission') and the Canadian Minister of Health and Welfare. Between 1989 and 1994, she was Executive Director of the YWCA in Montreal. From 1994 until 2003, she was Executive Director of the World Federation of Hemophilia. Line became the friend and counselor to many people at and associated with WFH in many countries in the world and her impeccable fluency in English, French, and Spanish was a great asset. From May, 2003 to late 2005, she helped establish a patientbased, not-for-profit organization in the U.S., The National Alliance for Thrombosis and Thrombophilia, as its Executive Director.
Line enjoyed working her showpiece garden at her country house near Mansonville. She had a completely catholic taste in music, was fascinated by astronomy and exploits in outer and inner space. Line will be remembered for her great intelligence, certainly, but also for her compassion and quiet but sometimes outrageous sense of humour. Line was without doubt the Renaissance Woman. Family and friends, worldwide, will miss her.
We wish to thank the Griffith McConnell Home, the Montreal Neurological Hospital and the CLSC Métro for all their help not only to Line, but to us as well. There will be a memorial service for Line at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 4, at the Outremont Chapel of the Mount Royal Funeral Complex. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Griffith McConnell Home or the Montreal Neurological Hospital would be appreciated

Milton Friedman

Thursday 16 November 2006 SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman has died at the age of 94, according to media reports Thursday. Friedman, one of the most influential economists of the past century, died last night, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site, citing an official at the Cato Institute in Washington. Friedman was a professor at the University of Chicago from 1946 until 1976. He was awarded the Nobel in 1976
By Lawrence Summers, Harvard economist and Treasury Secretary under President Clinton

If Keynes was the most influential economist of the first half of the 20th century, Friedman was the most influential of the second half. Republican Richard Nixon once pointed out that "we are all Keynesians now." Equally, any honest Democrat will admit that we are all Friedmanites now. We are because he won so many of his arguments with the conventional wisdoms of his time. The ideas that inflation does not buy more prosperity, that the draft could be replaced with the volunteer army and that giving more choice to parents improves schools are just a few of Friedman's heresies that are today's orthodoxy.

March 1, 2007 Arthur Schlesinger, who died, at 89m last night, was the kind of public figure who is far more familiar in France and the United States than in Britain. He was a public intellectual who not only contributed massively to his own field of historical and political study but who simultaneously and effortlessly thought it natural and proper to play a lifelong role as a commentator and discussant of the events of his times. Anne Applebaum of the American Enterprise Institute writes that Boris Yeltsin belonged neither to the Soviet Union, which Gorbachev had hoped to revive, nor to the West, which Putin now rejects. Had we (as the West) ever been realistic about him, we would have both understood his limitations from the beginning and appreciated his strengths. And had we not embraced him uncritically, we would have been less disappointed when things turned out differently from what we, too, had hoped.
