As always, we have the U.S. presidential campaign on the Agenda and certainly this week we cannot ignore Obama’s historic speech which has attracted world-wide coverage.
Canada’s recognition of Kosovo may also spark some controversy, especially following the recent discussions with Misha Crnobrnja.
It is the eve of the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and opinions continue to be sharply divided as to the necessity of the invasion, the benefits, results and the long-term outlook. We always admire Stratfor’s analysis of foreign affairs and commend it to you.
Yes, many more topics are worthy of consideration, but we expect the dominating theme to be the economy, with the news of the Bear Sterns’ takeover, the latest cut in the Fed’s ‘aggressive easing‘ rate, the outlook for the ‘softening’ economy and all the national and international (see China Moves to Stem Inflation and Calm Investors) ramifications.
So, you were wondering about the good news? Beryl Wajsman is launching a new weekly bilingual publication of opinion, The MetropolitaIn. He tells us that he has already lined up an impressive roster of writers and thinkers and will be with us this Wednesday to elaborate.

South Africa – No Decoupling Here - September 24, 2008
It wasn't supposed to be this way. Sure, by mid-2007 everyone was expecting the U.S. economy to slow. But commodity producers like South Africa were supposed to be immune - the so-called "decoupling" hypothesis. Past issues | his WN page

Putting China’s Kitty in Perspective - March 19, 2008
Back in 2006, the level of angst skyrocketed as China’s reserves approached the $1 trillion mark. But by the end of 2007 China’s reserves were up to $1.5 trillion, more than 40% higher than a year earlier. Back in 2000, China only had $166 billion, so this number has been rising fast.
