The latest version of the Opera browser has been released in an effort to get a jumpstart on its competitors. With the imminent arrival of Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2, this is probably Opera's last chance to gain market share for the desktop browser market. Opera 9 introduces a number of interesting new features that make it worth the download, but whether this will garner it significantly more users is hard to tell.
The most innovative feature the new version has that its rivals lack is a built-in bittorrent client that will allow you to download torrent files with a single click. Torrents are large files shared between many users and is the technology of choice for people who are downloading movies and music.
The new version of Opera also has widgets. These are small applications that sit on your desktop and perform specific functions like providing weather updates or sports scores. You can browse the various widgets they have available at http://widgets.opera.com.
Tabbed browsing was popularized by Opera and all the newest browsers use the feature. Opera 9 adds a new wrinkle. It offers a thumbnail preview of the screen when you hover your mouse pointer over the tab so that you don't have to open the tab to see what's there.
